Dream-Work
But between the unconscious wishes which constitute the meaning of the
Latent Dream, and the Manifest Dream itself, something takes place which
alters the dream's meaning so that it appears in consciousness as a disguised
wish. This intervening activity Freud called the Dream-Work, and it was his
investigations into the nature of the Dream-Work that first brought the realms
of unconscious and conscious psychology into an intelligible relationship with
each other and laid the foundations for his further explorations and
discoveries.
