Chapter XV

Because Elizabeth-Jane dresses conservatively and keeps to herself, few
people in the town notice how pretty she is becoming. One day, Henchard gives
her a bright pair of gloves. She wants to wear them to please him but she has
to buy a bonnet to go with them; then, of course, she needs a dress . . . and
then a sunshade. The first time that she wears them, the town discovers her.
She becomes so popular that her good fortune frightens her. She tells herself
she doesn't deserve to be admired because she is uneducated and almost
convinces herself to sell her finery and buy books instead.
