Chapter XXV

Farfrae comes to call on Lucetta. Both of them, for propriety's sake,
pretend that they want Elizabeth-Jane in on the tete-a-tete. They are hardly
aware of her existence, however. She quickly contrives to be excused and is
not missed. After that, she realizes with heartache that Farfrae is the second
man in Lucetta's story.

Henchard comes to call again. He, too, has fallen under Lucetta's spell;
even more than before. He feels awkward in her drawing room because Lucetta
has become a lady and he isn't sure how to act in such elegant surroundings.
