Chapter XXXVII

About this time, a great event in the history of Casterbridge is about to
take place. A royal personage is scheduled to pass through the town on his way
to the West for the inauguration of a great engineering project. He has
consented to stop briefly in Casterbridge. The town excitedly makes
preparations.

Henchard determines that he shall take part in the official welcome. He
goes to the council and asks if he can do so. Farfrae, as mayor, tells him he
