Goodbye, Mr. Chips: Introduction; Chapters 5 - 18

Chapter Five:

In the days leading up to their wedding Chips and Katherine plan eagerly
for the future. Katherine is always happy and looks forward to joining Chips
at Brookfield. Chips takes everything very seriously and confesses to
Katherine his awareness of his own mediocrity. She laughs in reply. She loves
him, she says, for saying such simple things.

Katherine feels that their leave-taking on the night before their wedding
should be treated with the proper ceremony. How shall she address her
bridegroom on this momentous occasion? Finally she decides: "Goodbye, Mr.
Chips."
