I Samuel

Introduction.

Originally one, but divided because of length, the two books of Samuel
recount the interrelated careers of Samuel (who gave his name to the whole),
Saul, and David. They trace the shift from charismatic leadership by Samuel to
David's establishment of a dynastic monarchy. The unstable Saul was
unsuccessful both as a charismatic leader and as a monarch.

The most recent scholarly studies have discerned a number of independent
units which formed the sources of the books of Samuel. Some of these centered
around sanctuaries such as Mizpah, Gilgal, and especially Shiloh. Others
