Survey Of Criticism: An Annotated Bibliography
The majority of criticism of the novel is in the form of reviews that
appeared soon after the publication of the novel. Most of it is high praise,
often comparing Pynchon and his masterpiece to Joyce and Ulysses. Even the
antagonistic critics do not deny the brilliance of Pynchon's mind, although
they find the novel over-written and pretentious. The scholarly criticism,
which should soon reach flood proportions, has begun primarily with studies of
the scientific metaphors in the novel. One study of the complete works, that
of Joseph Slade, is already in print.
