Detailed Summary Of "The Two Gentlemen Of Verona"

Act I: Scene 1

The play begins in an open place in Verona in Shakespeare's day, and
immediately we meet the "gentlemen" of the title. Valentine is ready to leave
by ship for Milan to take service in the court of the Duke of Milan. He
regrets that his friend, Proteus, is staying behind and draws attention to the
fact that "Homekeeping youth have ever homely wits," and that affection ought
not to interfere with education gained by means of travel.
