Stanzas 1-2.
The scene for Gawain's journey is set by a change in the tone of the
story. The mirthful, laughter-filled exuberance of Camelot in the holiday
season and Arthur's brave words are left behind. Instead, we are given a
somber, brooding description of passing time, of the transciency of all
earthly things. In the face of the reality of linear time, the boastfulness of
Arthur and bravado of the Round Table take on a more sober, perhaps less
imposing aspect. The year Gawain has before he sets out for the Green Chapel
is like any other - it passes quicky, but the end, the poet remarks, is seldom
