Chapter V - Boom And Bust

Harry Truman said frequently and seriously over the years that his
service in World War I had been his college education. As both a new
graduate and new husband at the age of 35, he could not wait a moment to
apply what he had learned.

Trim, friendly, grinning that ubiquitous Truman grin, he first tried
what he had learned about business. That part of his education had come
from running a soldiers' canteen (Truman was a canteen officer among other
things) with a bright eager young sergeant from Kansas City named Eddie
Jacobson. Theirs had been a uniquely successful and profitable canteen.
