Critics Respond To The Novel The Color Purple
The critical response to the novel The Color Purple has gone through many
phases; reviews that were written immediately after its publication (1982-83);
reviews that followed its being awarded the Pulitzer (1983 on); and
assessments done in comparison to the film (1986 on). Also, there has been a
steady stream of scholarly analyses of the novel, indicating its importance in
American Literature. Not since the publication of Richard Wright's Native Son,
in 1941, have there been such vociferous and varied responses to an
Afro-American novel from black as well as white American society.
