HANOI, Oct. 10 (IPS) -- Vietnam, like its fast-growing Southeast
Asian neighbors, is learning the hard way that the price to be paid
for lopsided economic development is overcrowded cities and high
pollution rates.
The situation in Thailand and Philippines is particularly acute
where Bangkok and Manila residents battle daily with gridlocked
traffic, hunt for housing accommodation, and breathe and drink
unclean air and water in the congested capitals.
In Malaysia and Indonesia as well, squatter communities abound
in the main cities as the region's authorities struggle to find
