New Budget Has Deve Gowda's Stamp on It.

After the presentation of the Federal budget by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram last week, Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda was in a particularly expansive mood.

He offered traditional Indian sweets to journalists at his Parliament House office, brushed aside objections of his security agents and remarked how his coalition government's first budget catered for the "poorest of the poor and the neglected sections of the society." He said it will stimulate growth in an economy "in which everyone, the rich, the middle class and the poor should have a stake."
