Votes can make a difference.

In 1972 and 1973, as a member of the Detroit City Council, I regularly asked the auditor general of Detroit, whose job is to audit the books of the various city departments, to hire a Black professional of his staff. The response was the same one that Black people have heard for ages, namely, "I can't find any qualified."

The revised City Charter went into effect in 1974 and it provided that the auditor general would be appointed by the City Council rather than by the mayor. I submitted the name of Marie Farrell-Donaldson to the City Council and she was elected. Thanks to the votes of Erma Henderson, Maryann ...
