Transcript: Michigan Supreme Court Rules Assisted Suicide Illegal

00-00-0000
NEAL CONAN, Host: This is Morning Edition. I'm Neal Conan. The Supreme Court of Michigan ruled last night that assisted suicide has always been illegal in that state and that a specific law to prohibit it may be unnecessary. The ruling overturns several lower court decisions. It says there is no constitutional right to aid in carrying out a suicide in Michigan. Presumably, the ruling means that Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who's assisted a number of suicides there, could be prosecuted under existing law. Joining me from East Lansing, Michigan, is reporter Phil D'Anieri of member station WDET. Good morning.

PHIL D'ANIERI, Reporter: Good morning.
