BOB EDWARDS, Host: The national symbol of the United States no longer
is an endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected
to announce this week that the American bald eagle has survived an
era in which it was hunted and poisoned to the verge of extinction.
The bald eagle's recovery is cause for celebration, but, it also
is raising new concerns about the effectiveness of the Endangered
Species Act. So, even as the national bird makes a comeback, there
are new fears about its future. NPR's John Nielsen reports.
