BOB EDWARDS, Host: The Senate campaign in California between incumbent
Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Republican Congressman Michael Huffington
is the most expensive in history. Of the $27 million spent so far,
two-thirds have come from Huffington's Texas oil fortune. Bankrolling
his own campaign has allowed Huffington to run television spots attacking
Feinstein non-stop since last spring, a strategy that has paid off.
The latest polls show that Huffington, who had been far behind, now
trails only slightly. Huffington has portrayed Feinstein, a former
mayor of San Francisco, as a career politician, a label she wears
proudly. NPR's Ina Jaffe reports.
