BOB EDWARDS, Host: Researchers announced a breakthrough this week
in plant genetics that offers the promise of helping to feed the world.
The International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines says
that it's developed a breed of rice that yields 25 percent more crop
per acre than varieties currently available. The so-called super
rice could be especially important to Asia, where rice is the main
dietary staple. Populations are growing, and land suitable for rice
cultivation is shrinking.
