BOB EDWARDS, Host: Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is reported
quiet today after several weeks of fighting among rival mujahideen
factions for control of the city. Soldiers loyal to President Rabbani
have been battling troops who support Prime Minister Hekmatyar. At
least 1,000 people have been killed in the latest fighting; hundreds
of thousands more have fled their homes in the city. The United Nations
says many of the displaced families have taken refuge in mosques and
other public buildings. For the past two years, Kabul has been the
scene of intense fighting between rival mujahideen factions since
