NEAL CONAN, Host: In South Africa today African National Congress
President Nelson Mandela meets his political nemesis, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The Zulus, in Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party, have been fighting
the ANC's Zulu loyalists in Natal Province for nine years. Over 8,
000 people have died so far, and the fighting could escalate as next
month's national elections approach. Inkatha refuses to participate
in the elections, which the ANC is expected to win. NPR's Ann Cooper
visited Natal last month and filed this report on politics in the
land of the Zulus, South Africa's largest ethnic group.
