SUSAN STAMBERG, Host: This is Weekend Edition. I'm Susan Stamberg. Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Jr. was back in Vietnam this week, the highest ranking U.S. veteran to return. For the man who commanded U.S. naval forces in Southeast Asia during that war, it was an emotional and purposeful trip. From 1962 to 1971 the U.S. military sprayed the herbicide Agent Orange across the countryside of South Vietnam, trying to strip away jungle foliage that camouflaged the Viet Cong enemy. Hundreds of thousands of troops on both sides were exposed to the chemical defoliant, which contains small amounts of dioxin.
