SCOTT SIMON, Host: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO
was born in the aftermath of World War II as a military alliance of
Western European and North American states against the Soviet bloc.
But with the end of the cold war, NATO's mission becomes less obvious.
Some in the United States argue the alliance is no longer necessary,
that the U.S. military in the future ought to look after American
interests alone. This spreading attitude of isolationism in the United
States has European leaders worried. NATO diplomats from Britain,
Denmark and the Netherlands this week have been touring southern and
middle western American states to take the NATO case ...
