NOAH ADAMS, Host: A new opera by Meredith Monk titled Atlas has now
been recorded and released on CD. Atlas has been performed in this
country in Houston, Columbus, Ohio, Minneapolis, and at the Brooklyn
Academy of Music. Eighteen singers, a small orchestra telling the
story of a quest, a young woman's travels. Some of the images are
simple, the smell of coffee in the morning, and some soar into fantasy
and space travel. And this is an opera without actual words. The
singers sing notes. Meredith Monk employs what she calls an extended
vocal technique.
