STEVEN STARK, Popular Culture Commentator: Television's new season
has now swung into high gear, and the most striking new development
may well be at ABC, where the president of the entertainment division
has asked all new shows to try to eliminate theme songs.

STARK: The theory is that these once-pervasive opening themes take
up precious time and encourage restless viewers to reach for the remote
