LINDA WERTHEIMER, Host: In the last few years much of the news from
Africa has been dominated by scenes of starvation, of people buffeted
by civil strife, pushed out of their homes and away from their farms,
unable to feed themselves or find food. Tonight we're continuing
with a series of reports of Africa produced by NPR and Africa News
Service, and a different kind of story of food from Nigeria.
Nigeria can feed its people. Thirty years ago Nigeria produced its
own food and exported pineapples and cocoa. It was the world's leading
exporter of peanuts. But then oil was discovered.
