Transcript: United States World War II Refugee Camp Has Reunion

00-00-0000
LINDA WERTHEIMER, Host: During World War II, anti-semitism and public attitudes against immigration blocked this country's doors to most people fleeing Nazi persecution. But 50 years ago this summer, the only refuge in the United States for Jews escaping the horrors of Nazi Germany opened on the outskirts of Oswego, located on Lake Ontario in upstate New York.

Nine hundred eighty-two Europeans were held for 18 months at Fort Ontario, an old army base, before they were permitted to stay in the country. Over the weekend, these survivors of the holocaust, returned to Fort Ontario for a 50th reunion.
