ROBERT SIEGEL, Host: There were two major announcements in the classical music world today. Lauren Mazell [sp?], the respected conductor, has decided not to renew his contract as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. The 64-year-old Mazell will step down next year to devote his time to composing. And it was formally announced that international opera star Placido Domingo will take over as artistic director of the Washington Opera starting in 1996. The Spanish born tenor also said that he will sing with the company. Dean Olsher reports that Placido Domingo's arrival in the nation's capital will raise the profile of the Washington Opera Company.
