Transcript: Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics Announced

ROBERT SIEGEL, Host: Scientists from North America continue to receive many of the Nobel Prizes this year. Today it was announced that an American won the prize for chemistry and an American and a Canadian will share the award for physics.

In both prizes, scientists were rewarded for basic research breakthroughs that have led to the development of such diverse products as new plastics and higher octane gasoline. NPR's Joe Palca has more.
