BOB EDWARDS, Host: Fragments of a shattered comet began raining down
on Jupiter over the weekend, causing explosions that spewed hot plumes
of gas hundreds of miles out of the giant planet's atmosphere. The
collisions left behind giant black spots that scientists are studying.
Collisions such as this are fairly common in the solar system, but
this is the first time that astronomers have been able to watch as
two celestial bodies collide. The collisions will continue all week.
In fact, a chunk of the comet hit Jupiter early this morning. NPR
science reporter Joe Palca is covering the event.
