NEAL CONAN, Host: Analysts and historians are drawing parallels between today's Russia and the old Weimar Republic of Germany. Weimar is the term used to describe a tumultuous period in German history after World War I when Germany tried to transform itself into a democracy and ended up a fascist dictatorship. Similarities between Russia and Weimar are disturbing. After all, Weimar, Germany, produced Adolf Hitler. From Moscow, NPR's Mike Shuster has the first of two reports.
