Transcript: National Service Program May Face Budget Axe

SCOTT SIMON, Host: One of President Clinton's proudest achievements, the National Service Program, is under attack. Earlier this week, House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he was totally and unequivocally opposed to the program. The White House welcomed the controversy. Officials there believe the program is popular and that they can easily defend it as a proper function of government. NPR's White House correspondent Mara Liasson reports.
