Keeping Faith with the United Nations
When the United Nations Charter was signed at San Francisco on
June 24,
1945, humanity was emerging into the uncertain dawn of a new age after
the
mind-boggling death and destruction of the second World War. Reflecting
the
shift from an age of imperialism to one in which governments professed
broadly
democratic concerns, the Preamble to the Charter begins with the words
'We the
peoples of the United Nations' as opposed to the opening reference
to 'The
High Contracting Parties' in its precursor, the Covenant of the League
of
