It all seems long ago and the ongoing rapid developments in
Czechoslovakia are adding a touch of unreality to this past. In point
of fact,
however, I am speaking of a stark reality which was brought to an
end by the
Velvet or Tender Revolution of last November. During those 39 years
or so the
Governments of Czechoslovakia and the United States built up an ideological
barrier standing in the way of the fully-fledged expansion of official
