Iceland was first settled in 874, primarily by Norwegians, and was under Norwegian and Danish control for more than 1,000 years. Since 1944, it has been an independent nation. The population of 250,000 occupies a land area about the size of Virginia, more than half of them living in Reykjavik and its suburbs. Icelanders are a homogeneous people, well-educated and prosperous, with a per capita GDP income over $20,000.
