The Roman Catholic Church has for centuries been the spiritual
guiding
element of the Polish people-entrenched in the national consciousness
and
imparting its values to cultural and traditional life. To a great
extent
defining the country's social attitudes, the influence of the church
deeply
affects the disposition of the people toward political and ideological
questions. Its popularity in present-day Poland is heightened by the
fact that
it is the only national institution privileged to act independently
of
communist control and, within limits, to make pronouncements on matters
of
