A Middle East expert says for 16 years the Arab states have wanted
American protection, but only at a distance. After Iraq invaded Kuwait,
the climate necessarily changed with the U.S. taking a major role.
NOAH ADAMS, Host: Five years after the start of Operation Desert
Storm, both Iraq and Iran are regarded as military threats in the
Persian Gulf. The major power in the area, though, is the United
States. U.S. Air and Naval forces are now based in the region, and
the U.S. has the capability to deploy ground forces quickly, if necessary.
The substantial American commitment is a direct result of the war
