With 1996 being the last full year of British rule, residents of Hong
Kong are not sure what to expect once Chinese rule is implemented
on June 30, 1997. Economics, self-rule and human rights are crucial.
BOB EDWARDS, Host: Nineteen ninety-six is an important year for
the residents of Hong Kong. It's the last full year of British rule
before the colony reverts to Chinese control on June 30, 1997. This
year Beijing will appoint a chief executive for Hong Kong and a new
legislative council to replace the current body, which is elected.
