Transcript: Lobster Lips Home to Strange New Microsopic Animal

Danish zoologists have identified a new microscopic animal which lives on the mouth parts of lobsters. It may be sufficiently unique to justify establishing a new phylum, only the 36th in the animal kingdom.

NOAH ADAMS, Host: If the following information didn't appear in the pages of a science journal you would swear we were making this up. In tomorrow's edition of the journal Nature, two Danish zoologists report they found a microscopic organization unlike anything ever before seen on Earth. And, as far as they know, this creature only makes its home on the lips of Norwegian lobsters. NPR's Joe Palca reports.
