Today is the 15th anniversary of the end of the greatest hostage crisis
in American history. Scott Simon spent that day 15 years ago with
the mother of one of the hostages.
SCOTT SIMON, Host: On this day 15 years ago, the 52 American hostages
who'd been held in Teheran were finally set free after 444 days during
which an American rescue mission failed, American policy seemed powerless,
President Jimmy Carter lost his office, and the Ayatollah Khomeini,
Warren Christopher and Ted Koppel became household names.
Fifteen years ago, I spent the final hours of the hostage crisis
