Transcript: Farmers Oppose Wildlife Refuge Along Missouri River

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to create a 60,000-acre wildlife refuge along the Missouri river, but many area farmers say they won' t sell their land, despite flooding problems.

BOB EDWARDS, Host: In 1993, the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers flooded for months. In the state of Missouri alone, the waters damaged more than 400,000 acres of farmland. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is buying some of that land to create a wildlife refuge called `The Big Muddy'. The refuge would stretch from Kansas City to St. Louis, and contain five distinct areas where the river would not be contained by levees. Biologists say that allowing the river to ebb ...
