To commemorate the passing of character actor Martin Balsam, Scott

SCOTT SIMON, Host: Martin Balsam, who died this week, was a character
actor. A familiar face with a name unfamiliar to many moviegoers,
who, nonetheless, knew his face as the hero's best friend or brother,
the endangered ingenue's pursuer or kindly uncle. Over a career
of 60 years, Mr. Balsam appeared in more legendary motion pictures
than most of us have ever seen. On the Waterfront, Psycho, Twelve
