New Orleans is the most famous site for Mardi Gras, but Mobile, Alabama,
has quite a celebration of its own. The Gulf Coast town boats 52
mystic societies and numerous parades as part of its festivities.
BOB EDWARDS, Host: It's Mardi Gras, the last day of celebration before
Lent, and it's a time of penance leading up to Easter. America's
most famous celebration of Mardi Gras takes place in New Orleans,
but cities all along the Gulf Coast, from Galveston, Texas, to Tampa,
Florida, celebrate Fat Tuesday. French settlers started the tradition
in North America, but not in New Orleans, but in Mobile, Alabama.
