On May 30, 1982, rookie shortstop Cal Ripken took the field for the
first time. He has not missed a game since, and last night he played
his 2,131st game, replacing Lou Gehrig as the Iron Horse of Baseball.
BOB EDWARDS, Host: Baseball has a new Iron Man. Cal Ripken, the
All-Star shortstop of the Baltimore Orioles last night played in consecutive
game number 2,131. That broke one of the game's most respected and
enduring marks, the consecutive game streak of the legendary Lou Gehrig.
NPR's Mark Schramm was at the record-breaking game at Oriole Park
in Baltimore and he has this report.
