Historian Robert O'Connell says the battleship was more a target during
the Second World War and less of a strategic player. However, MacArthur,
he points out, chose the vessel to sign the Japanese surrender.
BOB EDWARDS, Host: Over the weekend, a summer of remembrances concluded
with ceremonies commemorating the end of World War II 50 years ago.
The commemorations focused on Pearl Harbor, where the war began for
the United States, and on Tokyo Bay, where Japanese officials surrendered
nearly four years later. The war in the Pacific saw a revolution
in naval tactics that overthrew centuries of maritime tradition.
