by becoming fluent on a traditionally male instrument, the serbohar.
Shankaran discusses and demonstrates the unique Indian instrument.
JACKI LYDEN, Host: Shiva Shankaran [sp] was born in Calcutta, India,
into a culture where women seldom become performing musicians, and
certainly not on the obscure instrument which she's made her life'
s work, the serbohar [sp], the sitar's bass cousin. It's a contemplative
instrument. Unable to move quickly from one note to another, the
