New President Ron Allen says his first priority will be to try and
prevent the cuts in Indian aid proposed in the congressional budget
cutsand to maintain sovereignty. Clinton has said he will veto such
cuts.
ROBERT SIEGEL, Host: The nation's largest organization of Native
Americans has a new leader today. Ron Allen [sp] of the Jamestown
Squellum [sp] tribe in Washington state was elected president of the
National Congress of American Indians last night during the group'
s annual meeting in San Diego. Allen takes office at time when Native
Americans face major cuts in federal Indian aid programs.
