BOB EDWARDS: Curtis Mayfield was an established rhythm-and-blues
artist in the mid-1960s when the civil rights movement was gaining
momentum. He became a musical voice for racial justice. Mayfield'
s songs, with their strong Gospel influence, helped inspire a new
kind of music called `soul.'
