The early-morning defection of a North Korean air-force pilot to South Korea is just the latest in a series of incidents involving North Korea. Some feel the defection may mean North Korea is growing unstable.

BOB EDWARDS, Host: This is Morning Edition. I'm Bob Edwards.

A North Korean air-force pilot has defected to South Korea. He flew his plane over the border this morning, was immediately met by South Korean jets scrambling to intercept his aircraft. NPR's Julie McCarthy reports from Tokyo.

JULIE McCARTHY, Reporter: That Captain Ichul Soo [sp] was defecting was quickly understood by the two jet fighters who swooped alongside him.
