Scott Simon reminisces about Marilyn Monroe on what would have been
her 70th birthday. Marilyn, who died in 1962, was said to dread the
idea of growing old in film.
SCOTT SIMON, Host: Today would have been the 70th birthday of Marilyn
Monroe. That's a scene that's hard to imagine - Marilyn pursing her
lips in a boo-boo-bee-doop pout to blow out the candles on a cake
as cameras from Entertainment Tonight or David Letterman gaze on.
When she died in 1962, just two months past her 36th birthday,
many of her friends and co-stars said she had a dread of growing
old - not in life but on film. Shelley Winters says she based her
