In the Middle East, the souk is a sort of marketplace or mall where
people may purchase all sorts of goods and services. Our reporter
visits the souk in Damascus, imbued with over a thousand years of
history.
JACKI LYDEN, Host: It was a pity, in a way, that President Clinton
and Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who met in Geneva today, could
not rather have met in Damascus, the Syrian capital, because then
President Clinton might have had time for a trip to the souk. With
the Umiad [sp] mosque at its center, the Damascus souk is a warren
of tiny shops and cubbyholes off the romantically named street called
Straight [sp].
